Utah drops legal limit to .05 BAC

Utah has become the first state to pass legislation dropping the legal blood alcohol concentration limit for operating a vehicle to 0.05 percent. This change will go into effect late 2018.

The change from .08 to .05 was proposed for all states by National Transportation Safety Board in 2016. The organization, which can only recommend, not pass, laws, made the same appeal to states in 2013 without any action.

Significant pushback occurred in Missouri when the Legislature reduced the legal limit from .10 to .08. Additionally, there is currently a proposal to reduce funding for sobriety checkpoints in Missouri.

So, we are probably safe from the .05 for a while.
